Whether it’s a single piercing or multiples, clip-on, hoops, studs or whatever, earrings have long been a fashion accessory. Styles and materials may have changed, but throughout history, earrings have added more than a little bit of flair to the ordinary earlobe. You’ll want to have a look around at what we have to offer, but just for fun, also take this short look back at the history of earrings, courtesy of Birkat Elyon.
On some of the earliest archeological discoveries, scientists have found “holes” in the ear lobes. The unearthing of the 5,000-year-old “Iceman” in the Italian Alps revealed that earrings were worn as far back as the Bronze Age. A closer look at the death mask of Egypt’s King Tut also showed earring holes. Ancient peoples believed that “evil spirits” or illness could enter a human body through its various orifices; earrings were something of a talisman to ward off those bad vibes.
In the Middle Ages, the fashionability of earrings rose and fell. At one point during that period, ornate headdresses covered up the ears, so ear jewels were not needed. Heading into the 16th century, however, they became all the rage again – among both men and women. For example, William Shakespeare and Sir Walter Raleigh were among the fancy gentlemen who sported a gold ring(s) in the ear. Women considered pearl earrings to be the trendiest. At another level of society, sailors wore earrings made of gold, as a way to pay for a Christian burial should they be lost at sea and their body later wash ashore somewhere.
In the 19th century, ladies began styling their hair in more upswept styles. Naturally, this provided a great canvas to show off glittering ear-bobs. The early 20th century continued this trend (although piercing the ear was considered tacky). Screw-back and clip-on earrings took their place until ear-piercing became trendy again in the 1960s.
