How To Get the Best Wedding Photos

Even with everyone having a camera on their phone, you’ll want a pro to take the pictures on your wedding day. Birkat Elyon has worked with hundreds of smart couples who are in the market for dazzling cubic zirconia engagement and wedding rings; we’ve been around the “wedding business” for decades and offer these tips for getting your absolute best wedding photos.

START LOOKING EARLY

Great photographers book up fast, so about a year before your wedding, start looking around. Begin with recommendations from couples you know. Check out Instagram and online portfolios. Once you find someone you like, ask to see their full wedding shots (not just the best ones on their site). Arrange a meeting to get a sense of how you mesh with the photographer (because he/she will be around you and your guests the entire day).

USE A CRITICAL EYE

While reviewing photos from other weddings, see if the photographer’s shots align with what you have in mind, such as a mix of candid images as well as posed groups. Are the images clear, do the people look relaxed or like deer in the headlights?

LOOK AT THE PACKAGES

Standard photography packages tend to cover roughly eight hours and include the “getting ready” part through the reception. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check; overtime is typically charged at a higher rate.

PAY ATTENTION TO LIGHTING

Natural lighting should be used to your advantage whenever possible; with indoor shots, seek out areas with windows. When you’re outside, look for shady spots.

PRACTICE YOUR POSES BEFOREHAND

Get comfortable before the shoot by giving your poses a test drive. Experts recommend the following: turn your torso about 45 degrees towards the photographer and keep your neck up. Don’t let your hands just hang there: hold a bouquet (or your partner’s hand) or put your hand on your hip. You might even have a friend take some “test shots” so you and your partner know what works best when the main event rolls around.
