With so many costs associated with a wedding, some brides opt to save a little money by skipping the makeup artist and doing their own wedding makeup. That may seem intimidating, especially on such a Big Day, but it’s not impossible. With a little planning (not to mention, practice), you can pull off a gorgeous look. Here are some smart tips for doing your own wedding makeup, courtesy of Birkat Elyon.
PRACTICE
Even if you do your own makeup every day, a wedding look is special. This is where you should experiment ahead of time. It’s a good idea to take a selfie of the look(s) you like – and to note the products you used to get it.
GET A FACIAL (OR TWO)
Every look will benefit from glowing skin. Invest in at least two or three facial treatments ahead of time to help prep “the canvas.”
WEAR A PRIMER – AND AVOID PRODUCTS WITH SPF
A skin primer will help foundation and blush go on better (and stay put during a long day). The same goes with your eyes: an eyelid primer keeps eye makeup put. But skip anything that has an SPF. There’s something in that sun-protection stuff that “reads” funny in pictures. In short, it comes off as “white” in flash photos.
AVOID ANYTHING WITH SPARKLE
For the same reason that SPF reflects badly in photos, anything with a glittery effect gives the same awkward result. Eyeshadows, highlighters, powders: if they sparkle, skip ‘em. Also, extra-glossy lips don’t work as well as a creamy matte lip color.
(Of course, you can always add extra “sparkle” with a glamorous wedding band or engagement ring from Birkat Elyon. Our superior cubic zirconia pieces are both dazzling and affordable).
WEAR MORE MAKEUP THAN USUAL
Speaking of photographs, you’ll need more color and definition than your everyday look. This doesn’t mean overhauling your normal “style,” just boosting it. Start by shaping your brows, since they frame your face. Emphasize eyes with extra mascara. Use a creamy foundation (powdery ones can look “dry” over time). And wear a bit more blush and lip color to keep from looking washed out in pictures. Don’t forget to blend it all so you don’t see any weird demarcation lines.
WATERPROOF MASCARA
This is kind of a no-brainer, considering all the happy tears you’ll no doubt shed over the course of the day. And it’s essential for warm summer weddings.
GIVE YOURSELF TIME AND SPACE
Wedding days are hectic, and the last thing you want is constant interruptions as you put on eyeliner. Set aside some time – and a private space – where you can do your wedding makeup in peace.
And don’t forget the stunning wedding ring sets from Birkat Elyon. They’re sure to make a lasting impression and will make any bride look more glamorous.
