Celebrity Weddings Fit for Halloween

Celebrity weddings are famous for their over-the-top takes on classic wedding themes – white dresses, brightly colored decorations, cakes and more. Basically, it’s always a nice day for a white wedding in Hollywood.

Except for when it’s not.

With Halloween right around the corner you’re probably gearing up for parties and/or taking the kids trick-or-treating. So while you’re probably busy planning Halloween costumes, decorations and candy, how about taking a quick break to read up on some not-so-white celebrity weddings?

Get ready for all things goth, spooky and creepy. For these celebs, it was the happiest day of their lives, and they celebrated it on their own terms, ones that just happen to be perfect for Halloween.

Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne

We’ve written previously on the blog about Chad and Avril’s engagement at their recording studio, but we haven’t yet had cause to talk about their wedding – until now. Punk-pop star Avril said no to a white wedding, instead opting to don a strapless black gown when she married Nickelback’s frontman in July of 2013 in the south of France.

This was Avril’s second time tying the knot. For her first marriage to Sum41 frontman Deryck Whibley in 2006 she went a more traditional route. “I was like, ‘I’ve been dreaming about my wedding day since I was a little girl. I have to wear the white dress,’ she told Pop Sugar. “I wanted to be a princess, OK? People thought I would have done, like, some black wedding dress, and yeah, I would have. But at the same time I was thinking about our picture.”

She played more to people’s expectations with her wedding to Chad, but the gothic-ness didn’t stop with just her dress. The venue the pair chose was a castle, and decorators filled it with black roses, red lights and “eerie” candles.

The celebration was a multiday event that included time spent lounging on a yacht and several pre-wedding festivities. At the rehearsal dinner Avril wore a white dress with a flower crown, but it’s her black gothic number that’s remembered most.

Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson

Things have been going well for Pete Wentz the last few years, as Fall Out Boy, the emo group he plays the bass in and writes most songs for, experienced a hugely successful resurgence with their last two albums. It came against seemingly all odds, as the emo genre Fall Out Boy helped popularize seemed to have worn out its welcome around the same time Wentz married Ashlee Simpson in 2008.

Wentz’ lyrics, at least for the early part of Fall Out Boy’s career, tend to focus on some pretty sad and depressing stuff, and the band has long had a penchant for wearing black mascara, so it’s no surprise that the aforementioned Wentz-Simpson wedding went dark.

Decorators placed 10,000 black magic roses around the venue as well as other bits of red and black décor and chandeliers dripping with crystals. Those who were there described the wedding as something akin to a scene out of Alice in Wonderland.

Dave Navarro and Carmen Electra

Rocker/TV personality Dave Navarro and model/actress/TV personality/singer/probably something else Carmen Electra topped everyone on this list when it comes to macabre weddings. In true celebrity style they documented their journey to marriage in Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave.

For their wedding invitation, the pair laid down side by side. Naked. In a morgue. Yeah, that happened.

Ryan Sweeting and Kaley Cuoco

Pro tennis player Ryan Sweeting and actress Kaley Cuoco didn’t quite have a “gothic” wedding, but they certainly had one that’s fit for Halloween. Sweeting wore all black, but even more noticeable was that the entire ceremony had a “fire and ice” theme to it complete with an upside-down chandelier cake.

Sadly, the couple announced plans to divorce last month, but they weren’t the only ones. Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne also announced they’d be ending their marriage last month, and the other two couples we’ve listed so far have also split before their marriages could make it to until death did them part.

Josh Beech and Shenae Grimes

Finally! A celebrity couple that’s still married makes this list! 90210 star Shenae Grimes walked down the aisle in a black Vera Wang dress when she married British model Josh Beech in 2013. That’s right – they’ve stuck together for a full two years! That’s almost a marathon by Hollywood standards.

In any case, the two were married in the backyard of a Tudor home in the English countryside. The non-traditional approach didn’t stop with Grimes’ gown, either. When she wore it down the aisle, house music played!
