Celebrity Engagement Updates: Joe and Sofia and More

Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara

Few would debate that Modern Family star Sofia Vergara and True Blood star Joe Manganiello make for one of the most attractive couples in the world. Soon enough, the pair will take their relationship to the next level and become one of the most attractive married couples in the world. Following a flurry of rumors that Manganiello had proposed to Vergara on Christmas Day last year during a vacation in Hawaii, the duo eventually confirmed as much.

“I’m so happy,” Vergara told Entertainment Tonight. “We’re super excited about the future.” It’s believed that the television stars began dating each other in early July of 2014, making it less than six months between the beginning of their relationship and their engagement. They first met at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last May, when cameras infamously caught Manganiello checking out Vergara. For her part, Vergara initially thought her now-fiancé was almost “too handsome” to date. Guess she changed her mind.

So when’s the big day? And how big will it be?

“I think we’re going to try to do it sooner than later,” Vergara said. “It’s going to be a lot of people. It has to be a lot of people. We sat down and tried, ‘Okay, let’s see if we can do like 20 and 20,’ and it was impossible.”

Sean Penn and Charlize Theron

Joe and Sofia aren’t the only celebs to get engaged while on vacation lately: Sean Penn and Charlize Theron also decided to commit to each other while away in Paris this past November. Penn, 54, and Theron, 39, first started dating in December of 2013. After nearly a year together, Penn asked Theron for her hand, and she said yes – and he didn’t even have to give her a ring to win her over.

You read that right. Theron has publicly said in the past that she’s not into big weddings and big rings, so Penn left her ring finger naked. Though there is no ring, the two are said to be fully committed to each other.

Theron’s lack of desire for extravagant rings or ceremonies doesn’t mean she doesn’t want a serious relationship. Speaking with Vogue back in June, she confirmed that she wanted a long-term relationship but didn’t want to make a big deal about it.

“Let’s put it this way: I never had the dream of the white dress. And watching other people getting married? I think it’s beautiful for them, but to be quite honest, usually I’m sitting there just devastated,” she admitted.

“It’s supposed to be this night of celebrating love, and all you see is a couple separated all night making sure everybody else is okay,” she explained. “It just looks like a lot of work. And as you get older, you start sifting through the stuff that really matters.”

Penn, on the other hand, is no stranger to weddings. He was married to Madonna from 1985 to 1989 and Robin Wright from 1996 through 2010.

Ludacris and Eudoxie

Remember how Sofia said sooner would be better than later for her marriage? Well, rapper and film star Ludacris and longtime girlfriend Eudoxie apparently shared a similar mindset about getting hitched themselves. After dating her since 2009, Ludacris asked Eudoxie for her hand on December 26.

“She didn’t say yes. She said HELL YES! #milehighproposal,” the rapper, 37, wrote on Instagram to go along with a photo collage showing how he did it. While flying in a private jet, he had “Eudoxie will you marry me?” projected onto the grass below and bent a knee, causing his love to become overwhelmed with tears.

Within days, he surprised his fiancé again, this time with an entire wedding complete with a white dress and all. “Why wait?” he mused over Instagram when revealing that the couple had tied the knot before the calendar turned to 2015.

Jacob Pechenik and Zooey Deschanel

Already expecting their first child together, actor Zooey Deschanel and film producer Jacob Pechenik are now expecting another life-changing event: a wedding! Deschanel, 35, and Pechenik, 42, went public with the news in late January, just a week after announcing they were expecting a baby.

The pair was first spotted together in public in August of last year, so it seems they’re another example of celebs not wasting any time.

This will be the second wedding for Deschanel, who was previously wed to Death Cab for Cutie front man Ben Gibbard before splitting back in 2012.

Don’t Forget the Ring

Sean Penn and Charlize Theron may have gotten engaged without a ring – and, hey, more power to them as long as they’re happy – but for most of us, it’s important to symbolize our love for the person we choose to commit to for the rest of our lives. A diamond engagement ring is the most popular way to do so, but don’t forget to consider a high-quality cubic zirconia engagement ring as an affordable alternative or as a backup to wear while traveling.
