You know the wedding day rhyme: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” It started back in 19th century England, and each part has its own origins. The “something borrowed” comes from the belief that borrowing something from a happy, successful friend or relative will bring that same happiness to you. Today’s brides are finding modern ways to incorporate it. Birkat Elyon, who’s been providing couples with dazzling cubic zirconia rings since 1985, shares the trend.
JEWELRY
Yes, you could wear your Nana’s brooch, but why not work a borrowed piece of jewelry into your bouquet instead? Another fresh idea is wrapping a string of borrowed pearls around the stems.
FABRIC
Take a snippet of fabric from your mother or grandmother’s wedding dress and stitch it onto yours. This is a lovely way to honor them, especially if their dress isn’t quite your style.
TABLEWARE
Decorate a tablescape with antique vases or pieces of china from a favorite relative.
“BORROW” A DRESS
A hot trend among brides is to borrow the dress (literally) by renting it. There are a number of reputable clothing rental companies online and they offer several advantages over buying a dress: you don’t have to worry about cleaning or preserving it afterward, and it saves you a ton of money. (Another thing that saves you big money? Opting for cubic zirconia rings or cubic zirconia jewelry; they’re affordable and indistinguishable from the real thing!)
A TREASURED RECIPE
This can be anything from a recipe for a special cocktail to a dessert you made with your grandmother when you were a kid. Be sure to share the “why” with your guests.
YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG
Play the song your parents danced to at their own wedding (be sure to have the DJ tell the back story on your selection).
