Evan Spiegel and Miranda Kerr are engaged! The Australian model best known for her turn as a Victoria’s Secret Angel starting in 2007 – the very first Ozzie Angel! – said yes to boyfriend Evan Spiegel, the co-founder and CEO of Snapchat. This engagement has everything you could ask for in 2016: one of the highest-earning and most successful supermodels, a billionaire founder of one of the hottest apps around, gorgeous ring and one big, happy family.
So let’s dig into the juicy details!
Miranda and Evan dated for a year before deciding to take things to the next level, with Miranda revealing on July 20 on her Instagram account (see photo below) that the couple had gotten engaged.
“I said yes!!” Miranda captioned an excited Instagram post showing a photo of her wearing the amazing ring with the scene of the proposal remade via Bitmoji and superimposed over the image. Under the Bitmoji illustration of the couple were the words “Marry me!”
Although the engagement comes after only a year of dating, it shouldn’t come as a shock. Reports that a proposal was coming began surfacing in the gossip mags before the official announcement that the loving couple was considering a trip down the aisle. One source had even said Evan was shopping for rings during the week before the actual engagement and noted that the couple were “completely smitten” with each other. Another source has since stated that Evan and Miranda will have an “extravagant wedding, in true Evan style.”
Speaking of extravagant, how about that ring? Miranda has given the world a few great looks at the piece since the engagement, and it’s a real stunner, but a tasteful one. Sure, Evan could have afforded, well, virtually any ring in the world he wanted to buy her, and certainly Miranda’s is far from small, but it’s also not so huge that it’s going to be weighing down her wrist, which has certainly been the case with some of the rings we’ve billionaires give their fiancés over the years.
“Miranda’s ring is the quintessence of classic style and understatement,” jewelry expert Michael O’Connor recently told Us Weekly. “It’s a classic round diamond of about 2.5 carats. The value of the ring would be approximately $55,000.”
Continuing, O’Connor noted that “Despite the reported billions Spiegel’s worth, the couple decided on a timeless style that proves they ‘don’t need to try.’ After so many over-the-top rings, this understated, more meaningful ring may be the newest — and best! — we’ve seen in a while.”
Backing up a bit, how exactly does a tech billionaire meet an Australian supermodel? At a dinner for Louis Vuitton, apparently. At least, that’s how Miranda and Evan met, but they didn’t get romantic with each other right away. Miranda told the Sydney Morning Herald that the two were “really good friends for a long time before we started dating.”
As mentioned, the dating started about a year ago, but it wasn’t until earlier this year when the public knew about it. “We’ve just been having fun together and sharing our time amongst friends and family,” said Miranda at the time of the couple publicly announcing it was, you know, a couple. “We’ve been out publicly together a lot but just hadn’t been photographed together on the red carpet.”
For Evan, this will be his very first trip down the aisle. Miranda, however, was previously married to actor Orlando Bloom from 2010 to 2013, and the two have a five-year-old son named Flynn, who splits his time between the two parents. In fact, Miranda and Orlando established some guidelines for introducing their son to new love interests.
“We had to know the person for six months and feel good about them,” she told US Magazine. “Evan met Flynn, so, yeah, things are going well. Orlando thinks he’s great. We’re just a modern family now!”
Miranda and Orlando certainly get along better than most exes do. They even live near each other, because they wanted to make things easy on Flynn. “Orlando and I were living in New York, and we loved it there,” Miranda told Entertainment Tonight Online. “But we were considering what the best options were for our son. Orlando owned a place in Malibu, and he was saying that he wanted to move here. We thought it would be a better lifestyle for Flynn. He could be outside playing year-round, playing in the sand. We could have a garden.”
