Bridal Shower, Wedding Shower: What’s the Difference?

Back in the day, “bridal showers” were meant to help a young bride without much (if any) of a dowry set up house. Fortunately, we’ve gotten away from the archaic practice of a dowry, but showers are still a “thing” – and a fun one, at that. However, with changing times, you can count a “wedding shower” as an updated variation of this tradition. For years, Birkat Elyon has helped couples “seal the deal” with a high-quality CZ engagement or wedding ring  (helpful suggestion if you’re still looking…) – so here’s how to know which kind of shower is the best.

To start, bridal showers tend to be more of an “all-girl” event. It’s traditionally organized and hosted by the maid of honor, with some input from the bridesmaids and the mother of the bride (and sometimes, the mother of the groom).

When it comes to gifts, a bridal shower may include items not just for the couple, but for the bride herself.  She may receive luxury beauty products or lingerie, even a special heirloom to include on her wedding day. The bridal shower is usually held at a brunch or afternoon tea, and games often include things like trivia games about the bride or making a dress out of toilet paper.

Now on to wedding showers. These are a more modern invention, designed to be more inclusive with both men and women invited. It’s also a better option for same-sex couples.

It’s typically co-hosted by the maid of honor and the best man, by the parents of the couple, or by a group of friends.

As for gifts, wedding shower presents are meant to be enjoyed equally by the couple. When it comes to activities, look for things that can entertain everyone, such as trivia games about both the bride and groom, or outdoor entertainment like mini golf, kickball, or volleyball. That theme continues when it comes to a venue: wedding showers are less formal, so think of a cookout or a local brewery or winery.

By the way, if you want to show your maid of honor or best man appreciation for all their hard work during this pre-wedding stuff, you can find a great gift for them at Birkat Elyon!
