Fresh off her Super Bowl performance singing the national anthem, Lady Gaga has another big date on the horizon. We don’t know when the date is, but it’s going to behuge whenever it is – it’s her wedding! For those not in the know, the pop star/actress is engaged to actor Taylor Kinney of Chicago Fire fame. The couple met all the way back in 2011 when Kinney was working on Gaga’s You and I music video. The couple hasn’t been totally forthcoming about their wedding plans, but they have dropped a few hints here and there. Keep reading for an update on the stars’ upcoming big day.
The Engagement
As mentioned, the couple met while filming a music video. In the video, Gaga wore her mother’s wedding gown while Kinney portrayed the object of her affection. (Talk about setting the stage!) Just a few months later the two started dating. They actually split up for a short time in May of 2012, but were back together again in just a month.
Kinney once said of Gaga that she“is someone who’s always in your corner that believes in you and your work, and vice versa. You know, I love what she does and her work and music and charity. She inspires so many people including myself.”
After dating for three years, the couple got engaged just over a year ago on Valentine’s Day of February 2015.
“It was snowing – it was beautiful,” Kinney told the Chicago Tribune of the engagement, for which he says he had zero hesitation beforehand. “I just knew. It wasn’t a light bulb going off.”
After their engagement, Gaga called Kinney “the right guy” during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. “How do we know? It’s this feeling,” she said.
The Ring
Kinney pulled a bit of a fake-out when he popped the big question. He started out not with a diamond, but with candy. Of course, you can get away with that when you follow it up with a 15-carat heart-shaped diamond ring designed by Lorraine Schwartz.
“First he gave me a Ring Pop. That was kind of amazing and I was crying, I was so excited,” Gaga recounted during last year’s Academy Awards. “I said, ‘Yes!’ right away and then he pulled out the heart-shaped diamond.”
After she said yes, Lady Gaga was off to her family’s Upper West Side Manhattan restaurant, Joanne Trattoria, with Kinney to celebrate. Gaga spent the next two days strategically keeping her ring finger covered up whenever she stepped out anywhere her photo might be snapped.
The Dress
Lady Gaga is well known for her elaborate fashion choices, so while Taylor picked out her engagement ring, he certainly won’t be choosing her wedding dress. “I’ll leave it up to her. That’s in her court,” he joked during the People’s Choice Awards.
Besides, he’s too busy getting help with his suit. “I’ll have someone help me out with a tailored suit that fits well and looks nice… but I’m not out there doing that on my own,” he said.
Interestingly, Gaga had kind of the opposite to say about her dress than Kinney did. “It will be totally for Taylor,” she said. “It’s all about my man. I haven’t really thought about anything specific yet, but whatever it is, it will be totally for him.”
The Big Day
Kinney isn’t completely butting out of the planning, of course. It sounds like he’s been involved in most non-fashion planning, though he’s not ready to reveal the date just yet. Instead, he’s said only that they keep going back and forth and that it might end up being “a surprise.”
Appearing on The Meredith Vieira Show a few months ago, he explained why the date hasn’t been nailed down yet. “It’s kind of a logistics thing right now,” he said. “It’s just timing. She’s really busy with the show; I’m busy with mine.”
White Wedding
For Kinney, a smaller, more intimate ceremony would be just fine. Unfortunately for him, it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen.
“I could go to the Little White Chapel, but I think, well, she’s an Italian and that won’t happen… She wants a nice big wedding.” He then went on to imply that Gaga’s desire for a larger wedding is another reason why the couple isn’t prepared to announce a date for their big day yet.
As for who will be making the guest list besides family members, well, we just don’t know yet. The two have been pretty quiet on that front, but you can count on details emerging closer to or immediately after the wedding.
