The wedding cake isn’t just a yummy treat to enjoy at your reception, it’s a big part of The Event – both on the big day, and even later on (we’ll explain). Birkat Elyon has been involved in the wedding business for years, with their beautiful CZ engagement and wedding rings, so here are some cake mistakes to avoid.
CONSIDER THE SEASON Nothing like having a delicious buttercream cake start melting away during a summer wedding. Or find out that the gorgeous flowers you hoped to adorn your cake with aren’t available in the winter. Take the weather into consideration when you’re planning your cake.
THE WRONG SIZE Start with your guest count. A five-tier cake is a little much for 50 people and results in a lot of waste, and a single tier won’t cut it for a large affair, either. Small wedding, small cake; if you’re going bigger, consider one with a couple of tiers and maybe throw in a few small cakes to ensure that everyone gets a taste.
TOO MANY FLAVORS Offering too many flavor options slows things down considerably at serving time. Stick to a maximum of two.
AVOIDING COLOR Sure, most wedding cakes are in shades of white. But who says it has to be that way? A cake with pops of color echoing your overall theme is a fun, eye-catching way to celebrate. Consider using a colorful cake topper, piping, or some bright floral touches.
HIDING THE CAKE Don’t keep your beautiful cake tucked in a corner: show it off! Place it on a table behind the head table of the wedding party, create a backdrop for it, or place an arch of flowers over it.
FORGETTING TO EAT IT Yes, the reception is hectic, but don’t miss out on savoring this tasty treat (after all, you paid for it). It’s also tradition to freeze the top tier and enjoy a piece on your first wedding anniversary.
