Many modern couples are opting to bypass traditional wedding gifts in favor of donations to a favorite charity. This is especially true if they’re combining two households into one. It used to be that wedding presents were meant to help a new couple set up house, but times have changed — and more “stuff” is the last thing they need. So what’s the etiquette for having your guests give to charity? The experts at Birkat Elyon, who offer gorgeous, high-quality cubic zirconia engagement and wedding rings, have these helpful tips.
THE RIGHT CAUSE
This can be a group or cause you’re both passionate about. From animals to the environment, the Red Cross or a charity close to home, there are many worthy organizations out there. Maybe you recently lost someone to cancer? Do some research on the group’s status as a registered charity or non-profit (www.charitywatch.org is a great resource). Many leading charities also offer “wedding donation” plans, so look for the details. You might even “register” your wedding as a fundraiser. You’ll also want to find out if donations are tax-deductible.
SPEAKING OF WHICH…
Most of your guests will want to know if their gift of a donation is tax-deductible, so check this out first. If your guests want to donate anonymously, ask them to donate directly to the charity and claim their deduction. If you’re collecting donations at the ceremony, have the charity issue receipts to the guests.
THE RIGHT WORDING
It’s polite to let your guests know about your desire for a charity donation versus a gift on the invitation. You may write something along the lines of, “We are so grateful for the blessings in our lives and don’t need anything more. Instead, we want to give back…”
Realize that some will still opt to give you a tangible gift versus money to your selected charity. One way around this is to register at a vendor that also supports your cause; if you do receive a physical gift, thank the guest and consider donating it to a place aligned with your chosen cause. Do not insist that guests make a donation.
You may also opt to provide a list of several worthy groups to choose from (again, do your homework on each).
MAKE DONATING EASY
It’s tacky to ask guests to donate a specific amount. Allow them the option to donate anonymously. Work with the charity to make the process seamless. Additionally, you can set up a fun “matching program”: say, for every $100 donated, one member of the couple dances with the donor at the ceremony.
One of the best reasons to choose from Birkat Elyon’s dazzling array of cubic zirconia wedding rings is affordability and sustainability. Unlike diamonds, they’re “ethically created.” Also, unlike diamonds, they’ll save you a ton of money – which can then be given to a cause you’re passionate about. See what we have to offer!
