For almost every couple, music will play a big part in their wedding ceremony and reception. It’s – literally – the soundtrack to the celebration. But there are a few things that can create issues, from picking the wrong deejay or band, to choosing the song for your “first dance,” to playing songs that might offend your guests. Because Birkat Elyon has long been in the business of providing couples with high-quality cubic zirconia wedding rings, they’ve heard all the stories. Here are their tips for getting the most from your wedding music.
DEEJAY OR LIVE BAND?
Figure this out early in the planning game. Some couples prefer one over the other. They may want Stevie Wonder’s original version of “Ribbon In the Sky” for their first dance (deejay) versus a live group performing it.
DON’T START YOUR CEREMONY IN SILENCE
Your guests are sitting there, waiting for the bride to come down the aisle. If there’s no musical background, it could get awkward. Consider having something (or someone) playing for about 20 to 30 minutes before things get going.
MEET THE MUSIC
Make it a point to meet your deejay or band ahead of the Big Day. This may involve a “showcase” or other public performance. Pay attention to what they play, how they engage the audience if they take requests. If you can’t have a proper sit down at the time, schedule a one-on-one meeting later to make sure your musical visions align. You’ll also want to establish the decibel level, i.e, keeping it quieter during cocktail hour, cranking it up a little for the dance portion of the reception (but not so loud people can’t hear themselves talk).
CREATE LISTS
These include your “must play” songs (keep it to 10 or less) – and importantly, your “must NOT play” songs (ones that could offend your guests or remind your new spouse of an old partner). You’ll also want to mix it up so that every guest will hear something they can dance to. Don’t just stick to one genre.
PICK THE RIGHT “FIRST DANCE” SONG
The first thing to keep in mind is to not make it too long. That can get boring for those watching. You may already have “your” song in mind, but if you’re stumped, here are some foolproof choices to consider:
-“At Last,” Etta James
“As Time Goes By,” Dooley Wilson (from the movie Casablanca)
-“Come Rain or Come, Shine,” Ray Charles
-“Grow Old With Me,” Mary Chapin Carpenter
-“I Will,” The Beatles
-“Marry Me,” Train
-“Make You Feel My Love,” Adele
-“You’re My Best Friend,” Queen
-“You Are So Beautiful,” Joe Cocker
-“Maybe I’m Amazed,” Paul McCartney
