It’s no secret that life today moves so fast that it’s practically a blur. Days and weeks are consumed with work, keeping up with home and bills, managing a family. No wonder that couples often feel “disconnected” from each other. This is where a long weekend together can help. Sadly, too many of us leave our vacation days on the table (one study shows that 700 million of them went unused in 2018). While you may not be able to pull off a full week or two, a trip of three or four days is something most everyone can manage. It’s a great way to take a deep breath, have an adventure and most importantly, refresh your bond as a couple.
Here are some tips to make the most of a long weekend getaway.
START WITH A BUDGET
Factor in things like the costs of airfare versus driving, accommodations, food, and activities. If you drive, there’s the cost of gas. If you fly, you’ll also have to consider things like taxis, Ubers or trains after you reach your destination.
Another aspect to your “budget” involves the amount of travel time involved. If you hit the road to a place that’s only a couple of hours away, you can fit a lot into three days. However, traveling further afield may require tacking on an extra day onto the itinerary so that you won’t feel rushed.
SKETCH OUT A PLAN FOR EACH DAY
Because you only have a short time, it simply makes sense to have a rough idea of what you’d like to do each day and night: activities, places to eat, sightseeing destinations. Of course, packing too much in might be more stressful, so ensure that there’s some “down time” for you and your sweetie to just hang out and chill together. Because isn’t that the whole point?
BOOK ACTIVITIES AND ACCOMMODATIONS IN ADVANCE
To make the most of your precious few days, don’t leave things to chance. You’ll be able to relax if you know your hotel or B&B is all set (and it’s also a good idea to stay in the same place versus moving around, so choose a place that’s central to things you want to see and do). Booking ahead is also a good plan for certain attractions. For example, getting advance passes for a popular place like Disney will save you time – not to mention, headaches.
RECONNECT THROUGH SHARED ACTIVITIES
What kinds of interests first brought you together? What are some things you always wanted to try? Maybe you both love blues music, bungee jumping or historic architecture. Find a place that allows you to share your passions again.
FACTOR IN SOME ROMANCE
A couple’s massage, sunset carriage ride through a historic district or a special dinner will put the bow on your weekend getaway. Plan for something romantic to help rekindle the fire that may have taken a back seat to work, kids and daily life.
No matter how busy you are, consider taking a vacation day or two and heading out on a long weekend. It’s an investment in a healthy relationship and will pay off in both a refreshed perspective … and a much stronger bond.
