How to Announce Your Engagement

You’re engaged! Congratulations! Now it’s time to tell everyone all about it, but how to go about doing so? Obviously, you’re going to tell a few very close friends and family members in person, but is that how you want to deliver the news to everyone? Well, maybe, but maybe not.

There is a host of options for how to announce your new engagement in 2017, and the good news is that none of them are really “right” or “wrong.” It’s your engagement – announce it however you want to! But if you’re stuck and just can’t decide how you want to do it, check out these great options.

Do It in Person

As mentioned, you could announce your new engagement in person, and you probably will with at least a few of your closest friends and family members. But you have to decide just how many people you want to tell in person and whether you want to tell a whole bunch of them in person all at once at a large gathering or individually.

No matter how personal you try to be about the whole thing, though, word of your engagement will eventually start rapidly spreading through the grapevine. Eventually, one person will tell someone, and then that person will tell another someone, and then…you get the point. Nothing beats hearing about this big news in person, but you can’t tell everyone in person. So think about who the most important people are in your life and tell them either all at once or one at a time in person. If you can’t do it face-to-face, then use your phone as an actual, you know, phone – crazy thought in 2017, I know – and call them. This shouldn’t be a text message announcement; it should be a phone call one.

As for everyone else, well, you’ve still got plenty of other options.

Send a Video

Remember how I just got done telling you to use your phone as a phone? Well, hopefully, you listened, but with that done, it’s time to forget all about that. It’s time to think about using your phone as a camera. Take a video of you and your fiancé making the announcement and send it out to anyone you didn’t tell in person already. Don’t just start filming and press send/post, though. First, sit down and think about exactly what you want to wear, what you want to say and where you want to be when you do it. It doesn’t have to be overly complicated, but you should have some semblance of a plan before you just shoot and send.

Of course, if you do want to go big with the video approach, then it’s back to using your phone as a phone again – call a professional videographer. If you’re planning on popping the question, consider having a videographer present to capture the moment, giving you a professional-quality video to send out to everyone. If you’re doing this, though, make sure your fiancé isn’t the camera-shy or introverted type. If they are, putting them on camera to answer the biggest question of their life is obviously not a great idea.

Publish It

Extra! Extra! Local couple is engaged; couldn’t be happier! Read all about it! Want to do something a bit vintage? Submit your engagement story to the local newspaper and have them run it. In addition to being old-fashioned, this is another option that is only ideal if you and your fiancé aren’t shy, as you’re going to be spotlighted for the entire region to see. But if you enjoy the limelight, then this is a great choice that will give you something to cut out and add to your scrapbook.

Share It

It wouldn’t be 2017 without a mention of your social media options, would it? This is basically the polar opposite of posting in the newspaper, as it’s the most modern way to let everyone know about your engagement. If you really want to reach everyone you know with the news of your engagement, then fire up your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat and post, post, post! This also lets you use multiple photos and/or videos of your choosing to tell the story in addition to some loving words.

Mail It Out

Back in olden times before the internet – yes, I’m speaking of the days of antiquity when humans still lived in caves and in hunter/gatherer societies – people used to do something called “mailing” each other letters. If you’re planning an engagement party, you could stick to the internet for your invites, or you could mail out a nice engagement announcement/invite.
