Celebrity engagement stories: you can’t get enough of them, and neither can we. Thank goodness that this month we’ve got another big one. Two-time Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank has gotten engaged to boyfriend Ruben Torres, a former pro tennis player turned tennis coach and financial advisor for UBS.
“Went on a hike and this happened! I am so happy to announce the engagement to my dear Ruben,” Swank exclaimed on Instagram, where she posted a photo of herself with Torres last month. On her finger was the gorgeous emerald engagement ring he presented her with.
Not content to celebrate on just one social media channel, Swank also hopped onto Twitter. It was there that she posted a snap of her and Torres sharing a kiss following their engagement. “Sooooooo this happened!!! #heputaringonit LOL #loveisintheair … And then this happened….#sealedwithakiss,” she tweeted.
The social media celebration didn’t stop there, either; it continued into the next week. Swank captioned another photo, “#tbt to last night where my dear friend, @mollymickler took us out to celebrate our #engagement!”
The ring is HUGE and has a vintage look to it. It’s a natural Colombian emerald with a platinum art-deco-inspired setting that serves to nicely pull off the retro look. It was custom designed for Torres and Swank by Colombian-based jeweler Tres Almas’ Andrea Jaramillo (Torres is himself a Colombian native). The happy couple first publicly showed off the ring in person by spending a night out at Moët & Chandon’s inaugural “Holding Court” Champagne bash with Swank dressed in a navy and white striped dress by Tory Sport and wearing ankle-strap sandals by the same brand. The next night, they made an appearance in the stands at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tourney in Indian Wells, California.
The tournament, apparently, was the same locale where Torres popped the big question. Reports state that the two were “giddy” and “inseparable” during the Saturday night dinner and that they were seen holding hands “and barely left each other’s sides” at the tennis tournament Sunday.
Torres and Swank have been dating since 2015. One of Torres’ friends said at the time that “When he first asked her out, she was lukewarm, but after a couple of dates, things just got hotter and hotter.”
The couple tried to keep things on the down low for the first few months they were together. The friend added that during those early days they were “staying away from PDA and only holding hands under the table. It’s really hard for them to keep it a secret!””
For Hilary Swank, the upcoming nuptials will be her second. The actress/producer was previously married to her co-star from Quiet Days, Chad Lowe. When receiving her first Oscar for Boys Don’t Cry in 2000, Swank infamously forget to thank her husband of the time. However, she made sure not to make the same mistake twice and name dropped him in her thank-you speech for her Million Dollar Baby Oscar in 2005. Nevertheless, just a year later, the couple separated and eventually finalized a divorce in 2007.
Following the divorce, Swank would go on to date agent John Campisi for six years before ending things in 2012.
Recently, the 41-year-old actress vowed to spend more time with her loved ones. “I made a vow to myself a couple of years ago to spend more time with my family and my loved ones. None of us knows how long we have on this planet so it’s important to never take a moment for granted.”
Swank revealed at the time that she had decided to pass on several movie offers so that she could care for her father, who is recovering after getting a lung transplant.
“I’m his sole caretaker right now,” she explained. “It’s a certain amount of time, but in a lifespan it’s a blink of an eye. There’s been job opportunities I’ve passed on, and things that I said ‘I can’t,’ but really what we’re here for is our family.
“There is nothing I want to do more other than being with my dad in this time of need. And if it wasn’t me taking care of him, I think I would always look back and regret that opportunity to be able to care of him and help him through this extraordinary time.”
