We’re back once more with everyone’s favorite topic: celebrity engagements! Well, maybe not everyone’s favorite — we didn’t conduct a survey or anything. But in our completely and utterly unscientific assessment, we’ve discovered (read: guessed) that you love hearing about the stars getting engaged as much as we do. But enough with the preamble, let’s take a look at two of the most exciting recent engagements.
Taylor Kinney and Lady Gaga
He’s gaga for Gaga — Lady, that is. Terrible puns aside, what we’re trying to say is that actor and model Taylor Kinney recently got engaged to pop megastar Lady Gaga. Kinney popped the question back on Valentine’s Day. A bit of a cliché maybe, but that didn’t stop his songstress girlfriend turned fiancé from saying yes.
Of course, he gave her a rock so big that she’s probably getting a workout just from lifting her arm, and there’s nothing clichéd about that. Kinney presented the popstar with an enormous heart-shaped diamond ring that has the pair’s initials engraved into the band. Well, “engraved” isn’t actually accurate. Nope, Kinney took things to the next level and had their initials put into the band not as an engraving, but with more diamonds.
The heart-shaped diamond is a stunning 15-carat Lorraine Schwartz stone, which is a lot nicer than what the 33-year-old Chicago Fire star first presented Lady Gaga with. Kinney wanted to have a little fun with the engagement and presented her with a fakeout at first. He pranked her with a candy ring at first, and the little bit of sweetness touched Gaga’s heart.
“First he gave me a Ring Pop. That was kind of amazing and I was crying, I was so excited,” Lady Gaga revealed during the 2015 Academy Awards. “I said, ‘Yes!’ right away, and then he pulled out the heart-shaped diamond.”
She would go on to say that becoming engaged to the man of her dreams has made “everything better.”
Though she hid the dazzling piece under a pair of red gloves at the Oscars, Lady Gaga isn’t being shy about putting her ring in the public’s eyesight. In an Instagram post showing off what she said was her garden’s first strawberry of the season, she gave her fans a close-up look at her engagement ring. The diamond beautifully captures the light in the photo and garnered plenty of attention from her legions of followers.
One particularly astute commenter wrote, “Ha you know you’ve made it when your diamond is as big as a strawberry.”
Despite her public display of happiness, Gage was rumored to be butting heads with Kinney over when to have children. A source close to the situation told Hollywood Life that “They are both very committed to work and extremely busy, and that worries Gaga. She realized more and more she is ready to have kids and wants them to make time for that. But Taylor doesn’t think he or she are ready for kids yet. They are both still in the prime of their careers and have too much going on.”
However, when you consider Gaga’s public statements and the ubiquity of pics of her showing off the ring on her social media accounts, it seems the two are doing just fine and likely working through any potential difference of opinions.
Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson
Michael Phelps is no longer the only person in his relationship with something shiny worth showing off. Yes, the most decorated Olympian of all time got his girlfriend a little something to pair with his 22 Olympic medals: an engagement ring. About eight years after first getting together, Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson are getting married!
The two first started seeing each other all the way back in 2007, but they split up in 2011 only to get back together again in 2014. This time it was for good, apparently.
The world’s most famous swimmer posted an Instagram photo of the two back in February and captioned it simply and effectively enough: “She said yes.”
Johnson, in her own Instagram post, pointed out how she won’t be “Johnson” for much longer. “I’m gonna be a Mrs. [Phelps].”
Both photos of the Olympian and his former Miss California fiancé were snapped by Phelps’ Olympic training partner, Allison Schmitt, who also gave followers a close-up shot of the diamond engagement ring.
