Everyone imagines that they’ll one day get the perfect engagement proposal from their one true love. Here’s hoping it’s as wonderful as you imagined it in your head. In the meantime, though, you’ve got these romantic celebrity engagements to inspire you.
Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves
Matthew McConaughey proposed to Camila Alves, who was already the mother of his children at the time, on Christmas Day by incorporating it into a family tradition. His family opens one gift box at a time, so he put her ring in a box, and then another box…and then several more boxes. Camila had to open eight different boxes one at a time and wait for everyone else to take their turn opening a gift each time. Finally, she got to the one with the ring in it, and McConaughey asked for her hand.
Carey Hart and Pink
Who says women can’t propose? Well, whoever it was certainly wasn’t Pink – the pop singer took matters into her own hands and in 2005 proposed to motocross champion Carey Hart. When Pink showed up at that year’s Pro 250 class motorcycle finals at Mammoth, CA she, did so with the intent of being more than just a spectator.
As Hart came around on his third lap, Pink stood to the side of the track holding a sign that read “Will you marry me?” As he passed her again on the next lap, he saw the second sign that she knew she’d need: “I’m serious!” Those in attendance say Hart stopped his bike in a hurry and ran over to embrace his new fiancé.
Jordan Bratman and Christina Aguilera
Of course, most pop stars probably prefer doing things a little bit more “the old fashioned way.” So it was with Christina Aguilera. Music executive Jordan Bratman proposed to her in a hotel room full of rose petals and gift boxes. Inside each box was a present and a self-penned poem. When she opened the last box and saw the five-carat ring inside, she looked at Bratman, who bent a knee and asked the question.
Seal and Heidi Klum
Yes, their marriage didn’t last, but that doesn’t mean the proposal isn’t worth remembering. Quite to the contrary, it’s impossible to forget. Seal recounted the proposal to People, “I proposed on Dec. 23 at 14,000 feet in Whistler, British Columbia, in uncharted terrain on a glacier, in a natural snow cave, in an igloo built just for the moment.” It’s a highly recommended approach…if you have the means.
Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey
Why just propose once when twice can be, well, twice as nice? That’s Nick Cannon’s seeming mantra, as back in 2008 when The Empire State Building was lit up pink and lavender for the release of Carey’s latest album he took her to the roof of her Manhattan apartment and proposed. Carey, feeling a bit shy, didn’t know how to handle it. But Canon wasn’t giving up so easily. “He sort of kidnapped me and took me on a helicopter ride. Then he re–proposed.”
Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller
Exotic destination? Check. Extravagant jewelry? Double check. Actor Charlie Sheen and real estate investor Brooke Mueller jetted down to Costa Rica for what Mueller thought was just a fun trip – but Sheen had something else in mind. He gave her a Patek Philippe Calatrava watch from Robert Maron, Inc. The engraving read, “B—Wanna Get Married? Love C.” He didn’t stop there, of course, as Sheen also gave her a natural yellow 11-carat diamond set in platinum.
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
TV and movie star Neil Patrick Harris – or NPH, if you prefer – was taken completely by surprise when David Burtka proposed to him back in 2007. The couple was on their way to an event when Burtka made the limo driver stop for reasons that really weren’t clear to Harris. “I thought he wanted to get some booze or something,” Harris recounted to Out magazine. “And then he got on one knee and proposed, and I was so freaked out by it that I said, “Yes,” but I didn’t know what it meant. Then I got the ring and loved it, and a year later, on Valentine’s Day, I proposed to him in Santa Monica.”
Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne
Rock star Chad Kroeger and pop star Avirl Lavigne had made a habit of going to the music studio together, but one day Kroeger went in early before Lavigne. As Lavigne walked into the studio she noticed Kroeger placing a picture into the scrapbook she had been working on. Bewildered as to what he was up to, Lavigne walked over to discover that Kroeger had taken a picture of himself holding a ring box and placed the Polaroid into the scrapbook and wrote in “Will you marry me?”
Was your engagement as romantic as these ones? More romantic? Then you’ll always want to protect your love – and also your engagement ring. Be careful when traveling with your ring, or, better yet, leave it at home when traveling and take an affordable cubic-zirconia engagement ring with you instead.
