{"id":742,"date":"2014-05-22T09:09:49","date_gmt":"2014-05-22T13:09:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wwww.birkatelyon.com\/blog\/?p=742"},"modified":"2017-07-23T15:01:38","modified_gmt":"2017-07-23T19:01:38","slug":"diamond-still-womans-best-friend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birkatelyon.com\/blog\/diamond-still-womans-best-friend\/","title":{"rendered":"Is a Diamond Still a Woman\u2019s Best Friend?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have always been told, \u201cDiamonds are a woman\u2019s best friend.\u201d Although this statement sounds like a popular saying or marketing slogan, it actually originated from a Broadway musical and entered the mainstream via Marilyn Monroe.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Channing sang a song entitled \u201cDiamonds Are a Girl\u2019s Best Friend\u201d in the 1949 theatrical production of &#8220;Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.&#8221; Monroe <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diamonds_Are_a_Girl%27s_Best_Friend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sang the song<\/a> in the film of the same name four years later. The Monroe version of course reached a much broader audience, and its impact was legendary: the American Film Institute (AFI) listed the song as the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20071027165808\/http:\/\/www.afi.com\/tvevents\/100years\/songs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12th greatest<\/a> movie track of all time in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>In the current economic climate, it\u2019s reasonable to question whether diamonds are still so critical to express romance, love, or femininity. Conversations with our clients have convinced us that Marilyn Monroe\u2019s song no longer rings (pun intended) true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diamonds no longer necessary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we started selling our jewelry online, we did not expect our rings to be purchased as engagement rings or wedding bands. We thought that women had to have diamonds both at the proposal and at the ceremony. To our surprise, we have been selling many of our rings for engagements and weddings.<\/p>\n<p>We receive phone calls regularly from women who say they are getting married and want to avoid the high costs of diamond rings. They would rather have beautiful, high-quality rings that are affordable, preferring to invest the excess money into building new lives with their husbands.<\/p>\n<p>We have even been asked at times by the bride-to-be to speak with the fianc\u00e9 and convince him that he doesn\u2019t need to buy a diamond ring. It seems that men are under the impression that women expect a diamond ring \u2013 that diamonds are in fact \u201ca woman\u2019s best friend.\u201d However, in our tough economy, the trend has changed. A woman often would rather have a beautiful ring with a reasonably sized stone (see below) that is affordable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diamonds and the issue of size<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A specific issue related to diamonds involves size: many women don\u2019t like a ring with a very small center stone. When men feel they have to get a diamond but don\u2019t want to overextend themselves financially, they can\u2019t get the size they want: any small increase in the size of a diamond can cost thousands of dollars more.<\/p>\n<p>The advantage with our cubic zirconia jewelry is that there are no limitations.
