DECIDE ON YOUR GIFT GIVING POLICY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have a frank chat (ahead of time) about whether you\u2019ll exchange presents.  Also, to avoid any awkwardness, set a limit on what to spend.  Nothing worse than giving him a $50 gift card when he\u2019s just handed you a purse worth three times that.  Another alternative is to skip the gifts and agree on a post-holiday treat for both of you, like a weekend getaway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PROVIDE A HOLIDAY \u201cHEADS-UP\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re bringing your new significant other home for the holiday, let them know the house rules ahead of time.  This includes tipping him\/her off to traditions like the family Christmas carol sing-along.  While you\u2019re at it, let him\/her know which topics might be \u201coff-limits,\u201d like politics or a drunk uncle.  Additionally, find out if your mom (and other family members) plan to give \u201ca little something\u201d to your new significant other.  This allows them to reciprocate \u2013 and not be embarrassed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting the family requires being more than a little sensitive to the “house rules.” For one, leave the \u201csexy time\u201d behind. Stick to family-friendly pajamas (meaning: no lingerie). Keep the PDA to a minimum until you know how Mom and Dad will react to any kissy-face stuff.  And don\u2019t be a slug: set an alarm so that you\u2019re not the last one up in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
