So you bought yourself a shiny new ring (or someone bought one for you), did you? Hopefully it\u2019s exactly what you wanted and looks beautiful on your hand. But even if it does, there\u2019s still one other thing you have to hope for. You have to hope it fits you properly.<\/p>\n

Of course, you\u2019ve got options if it doesn\u2019t. You can have your ring resized if it\u2019s too big or too small, and we\u2019ll explain what you can expect from that process in a moment. But first, let\u2019s talk about how you can often avoid the need for a resizing by selecting the proper size up front.<\/p>\n

Picking the Right Ring Size<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not sure exactly how tight or loose a ring should be when you put it on? Relax, we\u2019re here to help.<\/p>\n

Rings that have been properly adjusted to fit the size of your finger are going to feel just a slight bit tight when you put them on. This, however, does not mean that they are too<\/em> tight. That being said, you should still be able to easily slip the ring on your finger, so it probably is<\/em> too tight if you can\u2019t do that. However, it should be a little bit more difficult to get it off. If it\u2019s not, then it\u2019s too big, which means you\u2019ll be at a higher risk of having it slip off and get lost than you should be.<\/p>\n

You should expect for it to take a few days until you feel completely used to the ring. During this period the ring will likely feel tighter than you think it should, but stick with it, and, assuming your ring is properly sized, it will start to feel normal once you get used to it. If several days go by and it doesn\u2019t start feeling any better, though, then it\u2019s time to contact your jeweler. You might need a resizing.<\/p>\n

Resizing Your Ring<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most obvious reason to have your ring resized is because it just didn\u2019t fit when it was bought. That\u2019s not the only reason, though. Weight gain or loss can cause the band to become too tight or too loose, respectively. Other times, people decide they want to start wearing a ring on a different finger, which is obviously not going to be the same size as the one it was originally measured for.<\/p>\n

Resizing, regardless of the reason, is a pretty common thing. It\u2019s best that you consult a jeweler or two and seek out a professional ring resizer before having your ring adjusted. As a general rule, rings cannot be adjusted more than two sizes up or down.<\/p>\n

Making Your Ring Smaller<\/strong><\/p>\n

Decreasing the size of your ring is a pretty simple process. It usually involves the jeweler cutting out a small piece of the band before rejoining the remaining sections.<\/p>\n

With a full circle restored, the ring is then soldered back together before any oxidation is cleaned off. Finally, the ring is polished to smooth out the surface. Once the job is finished, there should be no visible proof of resizing; the ring should look good as new.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that those statements are most accurate when you\u2019re dealing with a plain or uniform band. More ornate bands and ones with designs that run along their entire length introduce a higher degree of difficulty for the resizer. In some cases, the band may even have to be completely remade due to the intricacy of design on the band.<\/p>\n

Making Your Ring Larger<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are two common methods for increasing the size of a ring. If it only needs to be a smidgen larger, then stretching it out might be a viable option. Stretching is nice because it avoids cutting the band. The procedure is limited to when a band only needs to be made larger by half a size.<\/p>\n

When you need to move up by anything more than a half a size, you\u2019ll have to have your ring cut and a new piece of metal inserted where the cut was made. As with decreasing a ring\u2019s size, cutting it to make it larger can get trickier when the band is more ornate or has multiple settings on it. If that\u2019s the case, the settings may have to be moved around some to balance for the larger size without losing the original design.<\/p>\n

The Cost of Resizing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your final cost will depend greatly on your ring. Prices vary between gold bands and platinum ones, and labor charges go up if your ring is more intricate than a simple band. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $120 for a resizing depending on those factors and the jeweler you go to.
